Connection status

octoja shows the connection state of each device as a coloured ring around the device-kind icon. The same five-variant staleness scale is used in both the device list and on the device detail page.

Device list view

Each row shows the device-kind icon wrapped in a coloured ring that follows the same staleness thresholds as the device detail page. In the list the ring colour is the only signal — the extra server emphasis and the cobweb overlay described below appear only on the detail page.

Ring around the device iconMeaning
Green ringThe agent is currently connected and reporting
Yellow ringThe agent disconnected less than an hour ago
Red ringThe agent has been unreachable for an hour or more (up to a week)
Grey ringThe device has not reported in over a week and is considered inactive

Device detail page

When a device is offline, the indicator changes colour based on how long it has been unreachable.

Offline durationIndicatorWhat it means
OnlineGreen pulsing ringThe agent is connected and reporting
Less than 1 hourYellow ringThe agent disconnected recently — may recover on its own
1–24 hoursRed ringThe agent has been unreachable for several hours
1–7 daysSame red ring; on servers, the ring pulses with a red glow and the device icon itself turns redThe device has been offline for more than a day and should be investigated — the extra server-only emphasis flags it because a server going dark for that long is usually a real outage
More than 7 daysGrey ring with cobweb overlayThe device has not reported in over a week and is considered inactive

The last-seen timestamp uses relative time ("2 hours ago", "3 days ago") so you can see at a glance how stale the data is.

Change a device's type

Each device is classified as either a workstation or a server. octoja auto-detects the type from the operating system the agent reports, so most devices are classified correctly without any action from you. When the auto-detected type is wrong — for example a workstation that actually runs as a server — you can override it manually.

Open the device detail page, click the actions menu (the "..." button at the top right), and choose Change Device Type. Pick Workstation/Endpoint or Server and select Save. Your manual choice overrides the operating-system-based classification, and the device-kind icon updates to match. The device's operating-system family stays the same — only the workstation-versus-server role changes.

This action appears for Windows and Linux devices. macOS devices use a single type, so the option is not shown for them.

Last seen

octoja records the last time an agent was connected and the last time it sent an inventory report. The device detail page shows the inventory timestamp in the "Last Inventory" row, while the connection timestamp drives the staleness ring colour and the relative "Last seen" text ("2 hours ago", "3 days ago") so you can tell at a glance how stale the data is.

If a device should be online but shows an unexpected offline state, check the device's network connectivity and confirm the octoja agent service is running.
