Connect ChatGPT to octoja

Screenshot walkthrough: enable developer mode, create the octoja plugin, configure permissions and test it.

Connect ChatGPT to your octoja user in four steps: enable developer mode, create the plugin, configure its permissions and test a monitoring query.

Prerequisites: You need an octoja user with the MCP Usage permission, plus ChatGPT in a browser with Developer mode available.

Each person authorizes their own octoja user.

If your ChatGPT interface differs, check OpenAI's developer-mode instructions.

1. Enable developer mode

  1. Open ChatGPT and sign in to the account or workspace you want to use.
  2. Click your profile at the bottom left, then Settings.

  1. Select Security and login in the settings sidebar. Scroll down to Developer mode.
  2. Read the warning and turn on the Developer mode switch. It allows unverified connectors that can modify or erase data if given the necessary access.

2. Create the octoja Plugin

  1. Open octoja in a separate tab, go to Settings → MCP clients → Add MCP client and copy the server address. It ends in /mcp.
  2. Return to ChatGPT and click Plugins in the main sidebar.
  3. Click + beside Search plugins at the top right of the Plugins page. The New Plugin dialog opens.

  1. Fill in the dialog as follows:
FieldWhat to enter or select
Nameoctoja
Icon (optional)Leave empty, or choose a PNG icon.
Description (optional)Leave empty, or add a short description.
ConnectionKeep Server URL selected and paste your octoja server address, including /mcp.
AuthenticationOAuth
Advanced OAuth settingsLeave unchanged for the standard setup. No API key or manually entered client secret is needed.

https://rmm.example.com/mcp illustrates the format. Use your own octoja address, not this example address.

  1. Read Custom MCP servers introduce risk. Check I understand and want to continue only after checking the server address and understanding the warning.
  2. Click Create and wait for ChatGPT to prepare the connection.

  1. In Add octoja to ChatGPT, click Sign in with octoja. The browser opens octoja's authorization page.

  1. Check that the authorization page belongs to your own octoja instance. Sign in if prompted and verify the Signed-in user (Angemeldeter Benutzer in the screenshot).
  2. Review Permissions (Berechtigungen). Read access is always included. For the monitoring test below, leave the additional capabilities unselected.
octoja accessWhen to grant it
View octoja dataIncluded for reading available devices, monitoring data and cases.
Make changes to octojaWhen the plugin should update data in octoja.
Live device accessWhen it should retrieve live device data or files.
Control remote computersWhen it should view screens and operate mouse and keyboard.
Run scripts and automationsWhen it should execute scripts, automations or power actions.
  1. Click Allow (Zulassen in the screenshot).

  1. Return to ChatGPT. The octoja is installed. message confirms installation, and the plugin settings show the connected account.

3. Configure octoja Plugin permissions in ChatGPT

Choose when ChatGPT asks you before using the plugin. This setting does not expand the access you granted in octoja during setup.

  1. In the octoja plugin settings, click Permissions. To return here later, open Settings → Plugins and select octoja.

  1. Choose the approval behavior you want:
ChatGPT optionBehavior shown in ChatGPT
Always askAsks before reading or making changes. Recommended for your first test.
Allow read actionsReads without asking, but asks before making changes.
Allow low-risk actionsThe displayed default. Automatically approves low-risk actions but may deny actions involving sensitive information.
Allow all actionsDoes not ask before reading or taking action. Marked ELEVATED RISK.

Allow all actions is optional, not a connection requirement. Use it only when you deliberately want the plugin to act without asking. For a cautious start, select Always ask.

4. Test the octoja Plugin

  1. Click New chat.
  2. Type @octoja in the message input. Under Plugins, select octoja from the suggestion list. It appears as a blue plugin label in the input.

  1. After selecting the plugin, enter a prompt. Replace the placeholder with the device name:

What's the check-status on [device name]?

  1. Send the message and approve the tool call if ChatGPT asks.
  2. Wait for the reply. Expand Called tool to inspect the requests and results, then compare them with the summary. Successful calls returning the intended device's monitoring data confirm the connection; a connection claim in the answer alone does not.

Your result will depend on the device and its checks. If no device matches, check the name and your octoja user's access. If ChatGPT does not use the plugin, start a new chat and select it through @octoja again. For access errors, review both the octoja grant and your user's permissions.
