GPU

Monitor utilization, graphics memory and temperature of the graphics cards in your Windows and Linux devices with your own thresholds.

The GPU check monitors utilization, graphics memory usage, and temperature of a device's graphics cards. It runs locally on the device with the octoja agent on Windows and Linux (x64 and ARM64 each), every 5 minutes by default. macOS is not supported.

Steps

  1. Open the device and choose Checks โ†’ Add Check โ†’ GPU.
  2. Adjust which values are monitored and their thresholds if needed.
  3. Click Add Check.

To assign the check to multiple devices, use a configuration package.

Settings

FieldTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
Monitor utilizationToggleNoOnEvaluates GPU utilization
Utilization warning (%)IntegerNo90Warning when a GPU reaches this utilization. Visible when Monitor utilization is on
Utilization critical (%)IntegerNo98Critical when a GPU reaches this utilization. Visible when Monitor utilization is on
Monitor memory (VRAM)ToggleNoOnEvaluates usage as a percentage of the dedicated memory; skipped when the GPU does not report a total
Memory warning (%)IntegerNo90Visible when Monitor memory (VRAM) is on
Memory critical (%)IntegerNo95Visible when Monitor memory (VRAM) is on
Monitor temperatureToggleNoOnEvaluates GPU temperature when the data source provides one
Temperature warning (ยฐC)IntegerNo85Visible when Monitor temperature is on
Temperature critical (ยฐC)IntegerNo95Visible when Monitor temperature is on
When no GPU is foundSelection (Warning / Ignore (OK))NoWarningResult for devices without a readable GPU, such as servers or virtual machines

Utilization and memory thresholds are limited to 0โ€“100 %, temperature thresholds to 0โ€“150 ยฐC. If a warning threshold is higher than its critical threshold, the check swaps the two values.

Data sources

SourceWhenValues collected
nvidia-smiNVIDIA driver installed; on Windows in System32 or C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NVSMI, on Linux in /usr/bin or /usr/local/binUtilization, used and total graphics memory, temperature
Windows GPU performance countersWindows, when nvidia-smi is missing or reports no GPUUtilization and used dedicated memory, no temperature
amdgpu driver under /sys/class/drmLinux, when nvidia-smi is missing or reports no GPUUtilization, used and total graphics memory, temperature, as far as the driver provides them

On Windows, the check derives utilization from three samples taken one second apart and, like Task Manager, uses the busiest engine of the graphics card. The performance counters report no total graphics memory, so memory usage is not evaluated against the thresholds there.

Results

ConditionResult
A GPU's utilization, memory usage, or temperature reaches the critical thresholdCritical
A GPU's utilization, memory usage, or temperature reaches the warning thresholdWarning
No readable GPU foundWarning or OK, depending on When no GPU is found
nvidia-smi fails or does not respond within 60 seconds (on Linux), or the Windows performance counters cannot be readFailure
All evaluated values are below the warning thresholdsOK

Each GPU is evaluated separately; the overall result is the most severe state across all GPUs. A value the data source does not provide is skipped.

  • On Linux, an nvidia-smi error is reported as a failure; on Windows, the check falls back to the performance counters instead.
  • With Ignore (OK), a device without a readable GPU reports OK. This does not confirm a healthy graphics card.
