Wake device

How the Wake device action wakes an offline device with Wake-on-LAN, what it needs, and when the step fails.

Wake device wakes an offline device with a Wake-on-LAN packet over the local network. Another online device on the same network, called a relay, sends the packet. In an automation, octoja picks it automatically; you choose a specific relay only when you wake a device from its device page.

Prerequisites

  • The device is assigned to a customer, and its inventory lists a wired Ethernet adapter with its MAC address and IPv4 subnet. The device must have reported these details in an inventory while it was online.
  • At least one other online device has an Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter in the same IPv4 subnet. It belongs to the same customer and the same customer site. If the target device has no site, the relay must not have one either.
  • Wake-on-LAN is enabled in the device's network adapter and firmware.

Configuration fields

This action has no fields of its own.

Platform support

PlatformSupported
WindowsYes
LinuxYes
macOSYes

The target device's operating system does not matter; it only needs a wired Ethernet adapter. Relays can run on any of the three platforms.

Outputs

This action produces no outputs.

Result behaviour

The step does not wait for the device to start or reconnect, so a success does not mean the device woke up. A following step that needs the device starts immediately and usually still finds it offline. Its If device is offline setting then applies.

CaseResult
A relay sent the packetSucceeded
The device is already onlineFailed
The device has no customer, no wired Ethernet adapter, or no known IPv4 subnetFailed – network information is missing
No online relay on the same subnet at the same customer siteFailed – no relay found
Every relay tried runs an agent version too old for Wake-on-LANFailed – relays must be updated
No relay tried could send the packet or answered in timeFailed
The step as a whole exceeds its time limitTimed out
