Manage Proxmox VMs and containers

Inspect a Proxmox VE host’s QEMU VMs and LXC containers and manage snapshots.

On a Proxmox VE host, you can inspect QEMU VMs and LXC containers directly in octoja, start or stop them, and manage their snapshots. The list shows the VMs and containers on this host. To manage those on another cluster host, open that host's device page.

Prerequisites

This feature must first be enabled for your instance. An administrator enables Proxmox VE host management under Settings → Beta features.

  • Install the octoja agent directly on the Linux Proxmox VE host. It accesses Proxmox locally with root privileges; an agentless network device or an agent inside a guest VM does not replace this. Separate Proxmox API credentials are not needed.
  • Wait for an inventory scan that identifies the host as a Proxmox node. If needed, trigger one manually.
  • Your group needs the Run Maintenance device action on the host for live queries. Power actions and snapshot controls additionally require Proxmox VE management. Assign device actions under Administration → Groups → Device Access.
  • The host agent must be online for live data and actions.

Inspect the host, VMs and containers

  1. Open the host under Devices and select the Proxmox tab.
  2. Check the node overview and Virtual machines & containers. The list shows state, CPU and memory usage. Expand a guest to see its VMID, configured resources, start-at-boot setting and MAC addresses, among other details.
  3. Check Node storage for usage and capacity. For a cluster, the overview also shows quorum and other hosts.

Use Managed device to open a VM's or container's device page when octoja can unambiguously match it to a device you can access.

Showing last collected inventory means you are seeing stored configuration rather than live data. It does not establish the current power state or let you run actions. Read the accompanying live-query error; use it to check the agent connection or the reported cause, then reload the tab.

Change power state

Choose the appropriate action in the guest row. Start and Resume run immediately; other actions ask you to confirm with Apply.

StateActions
RunningShut down, Reboot, Stop, Suspend
PausedResume, Stop
StoppedStart

Stop powers the VM or container off abruptly. Prefer Shut down when possible. After shutting down or rebooting, wait until the list shows the expected power state.

Manage snapshots

  1. Open Snapshots in the guest row and choose Take snapshot.
  2. Enter a name starting with an ASCII letter and containing at most 40 letters, digits, hyphens or underscores. A description is optional.
  3. For QEMU VMs, you can enable Include the virtual machine's memory; it is off by default. This option is not offered for LXC containers.
  4. Click Create, then check for the new entry in the snapshot list. Proxmox must support snapshots for the guest's configuration and storage.

Roll back restores a snapshot and discards changes made since it was taken. Delete removes it irreversibly. Both actions require confirmation. If an action fails or times out, check the guest state and Proxmox tasks before retrying.

FAQ

No. The Proxmox tab manages the VE host, its VMs and containers; it does not report Proxmox Backup Server backup or sync results. For a Linux host using ZFS, the ZFS Pools check can monitor pool health and capacity. A healthy pool does not prove that backups or synchronization succeeded; check those results in Proxmox Backup Server separately.
