Set a device's customer, alias and tags
Assign a device to a customer and site, give it an alias, and set tags manually.
On the device detail page you assign a device to a customer and site, give it an alias that is easier to recognise, and set your own tags. For many devices at once, use the bulk actions described in Edit multiple devices at once.
Prerequisites
- Your group grants the Edit Device device action for the device. Without it you can only view customer, alias and tags.
- You can create tags that do not yet exist in octoja only with the Create Custom Tags permission. Without it you can use existing tags.
- You can remove a device's customer only if one of your groups has Access to all customers enabled on its Customer Access tab.
Assign a customer and site
- Open the device, click the actions menu (…) in the top-right corner and choose Assign Customer.
- Choose the customer under Customer. If you change the customer, the previous site is cleared. If you have access to only one customer, it is filled in and cannot be changed.
- Optionally choose one of the customer's sites under Site. If the right site is missing, create it directly with Add site; see Add a Site.
- Click Save.
The × in the Site field removes the site, the × in the Customer field removes the customer. You can also open the dialog from the command bar with Assign Customer.
Customer and site determine which groups can reach the device and which config packages, patch policies and tag rules with customer or site conditions match it. For Wake-on-LAN, the relay must belong to the same customer and site. If the change moves the device out of your access, octoja shows "The device was moved to a customer outside your access scope." and opens the device list.
Note: If the agent re-enrolls with a customer-bound enrollment token, the device takes over that token's customer and site. Details are in How customers, sites, and devices work.
Give the device an alias
For a device with an agent, the device name comes from the operating system and cannot be changed in octoja. An alias gives the device an additional, descriptive name, such as Reception printer PC.
- In the header of the device detail page, click Add alias after the device name and the slash, or click the existing alias.
- Enter the alias (up to 100 characters) and confirm with Enter or the check mark. Escape or × discards your input.
Clearing the field and saving removes the alias. When an alias is set, the device list shows it instead of the device name; the header of the device detail page shows both. The device list search finds the device by either name.
Set tags manually
The tags appear in the header of the device detail page next to the name. Tags shown in grey are assigned automatically by tag rules; you change them through the rule, not on the device. Tags shown in blue were set manually by you or a colleague.
- Add: Click + (or Add tag... if the device has no tags yet), type the name and pick a suggestion, or confirm a new name with Enter.
- Rename: Click a blue tag, change the text and confirm with Enter. Escape cancels.
- Remove: Click the tag's ×.
A device carries at most 50 manual tags of up to 100 characters each. If not all tags fit on the line, octoja groups the rest, for example as +3 more; click it to see them.
Tags have an effect beyond the device: config packages and patch policy rings can select devices with the Tags condition. Before renaming or removing a tag, check whether a rule uses it.
FAQ
Does the device name update after renaming it in the operating system?
Does the device name update after renaming it in the operating system?
Yes. For devices with an agent, octoja picks up the new name during the next successful inventory, provided the operating system already reports it. You can start an inventory manually on the connected device instead of waiting for the next automatic scan.
An existing alias is preserved and still appears in the device list instead of the device name. The device detail page header shows both.
