Wake a device with Wake-on-LAN
Wake an offline device through another device on the same network, automatically or through a relay you choose.
You can wake a powered-off or sleeping device with the octoja agent via Wake-on-LAN directly from its device page. Because the device itself cannot be reached, another online device of the same customer sends the wake packet on its local network — the relay.
Prerequisites
- Your group grants the Wake Device device action for the device. An administrator assigns it under Administration → Groups → Device Access → Allowed actions.
- The device is assigned to a customer. During an earlier inventory, while it was online, it reported a wired Ethernet adapter with a MAC address and an IPv4 subnet.
- Wake-on-LAN is enabled in the device's network adapter and firmware.
- At least one other device with the octoja agent is online and belongs to the same customer and the same site. If the target device has no site, the relay must not have one either. You set customer and site as described in Set a device's customer, alias and tags.
Wake the device
- Open the offline device under Devices.
- Click the button with the power icon in the top-right corner (tooltip Wake device). The button appears only while the device is offline.
- Wait for the message. On success it reads "Wake-on-LAN packets were sent through a peer agent. The device may take a moment to wake."
octoja picks a relay automatically: a connected device of the same customer and site with an Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter in the same IPv4 subnet as the target device. Devices that reported most recently are preferred. If one relay fails, octoja tries the next.
The message only confirms that the packet was sent. You can tell that the device started once it shows as Online again.
Wake through a specific relay
Choose the relay yourself if the automatic search finds no suitable device — for example because several IPv4 subnets run side by side on the network — or if you want to use a particular device as the relay.
- Open the offline device, click the actions menu (…) in the top-right corner and choose Wake using a specific relay. The entry appears only when the device is assigned to a customer.
- In the Choose a Wake-on-LAN relay dialog, pick a device under Relay device. The list shows online devices with an agent at the target device's site.
- Click Wake device.
If the chosen relay is in a different IPv4 subnet than the target device, it sends the packet with the target device's MAC address on its own networks. This only reaches the target device if both devices are in the same broadcast segment.
Both options are also available in the command bar as Wake Device and Wake Device Using Relay.
How the relay sends the packet
The relay sends the Wake-on-LAN packet three times via UDP to port 9 at the subnet's broadcast address. Routers normally do not forward such broadcasts to other networks, so the relay must be in the same network segment as the target device.
The overall outcome of the wake action is recorded in the target device's log under Activities → Logs.

FAQ
Can I see which relay sent the Wake-on-LAN packet?
Can I see which relay sent the Wake-on-LAN packet?
With automatic selection, neither the success message nor the entry under Activities → Logs identifies the relay used. The log shows the overall outcome of the wake action, not the individual relay attempts.
To choose the sending device yourself, select Wake using a specific relay before waking the device, as described above.
