TR-064 Gateway

Monitor a FRITZ!Box internet connection over TR-064: WAN/DSL state, sync rates, line quality, and firmware updates.

The TR-064 Gateway check monitors a FRITZ!Box internet connection: WAN/DSL state, synchronization rates, noise margins, line errors and available firmware. Its default interval is 5 minutes.

Prerequisites

  • You need Monitoring Check Management permission and access to the target device.
  • An online agent must be able to reach the gateway on the customer network. No agent is installed on the FRITZ!Box itself.
  • TR-064 must be enabled on the gateway. Where authentication is required, use a FRITZ!Box user with access to settings.
  • Preferably add the FRITZ!Box as a network device with TR-064 first and test the connection.

Steps

  1. Open the network device under Devices and choose Checks → Add Check → TR-064 Gateway.
  2. Check the connection. For a network device with saved TR-064 settings, the check uses its address, port, TLS setting and credentials instead of its own connection values. Thresholds remain configurable on the check. Alternatively, assign the check to an agent-managed device that can reach the gateway and enter the connection there.
  3. Adjust thresholds to suit the connection and click Add Check.
  4. Open the result after the first run. Check WAN/DSL state and sync rates; missing measurements do not automatically mean zero values or a fault.

Settings

FieldTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
Gateway host / IPTextYes—Reachable hostname or LAN IP; agentless devices use their saved address

TR-064 username, TR-064 passwordText / passwordGateway-dependentEmptyLogin with access to settings
Noise margin warning (dB)NumberNo6Warning at or below this value
Noise margin critical (dB)NumberNo3Critical at or below this value
CRC warning (errors/s)NumberNo5Warning at or above this error rate
CRC critical (errors/s)NumberNo20Critical at or above this error rate
Minimum downstream (Kbit/s), Minimum upstream (Kbit/s)IntegerNo0Warning below the expected sync rate; 0 disables it
Warn when firmware update is availableBooleanNoYesReports an available update but does not install it

For noise margin and CRC, 0 also disables the individual threshold. If the warning and critical values are entered the wrong way round, the check swaps them before evaluating. The measurement is the connection's synchronization rate, not a download speed test.

Results

ObservationResult
All reported link states are healthy: WAN connected and DSL synchronized where available; no threshold breached and no firmware findingOK
WAN connecting or disconnecting, or DSL initializingWarning
Reported WAN/DSL state is otherwise disconnected or not synchronizedCritical
Neither WAN nor DSL state availableWarning
Gateway unreachable or no supported data availableFailure

The overall result also considers configured thresholds and firmware warnings. Noise margin and CRC are evaluated in both directions where provided. Line attenuation and FEC errors are additional information without their own alert threshold.

CRC and FEC rates need two samples between 30 seconds and 24 hours apart. They remain empty on the first run, after a counter reset or when counters are absent. Check history after further runs. Cable or fiber devices may not supply DSL measurements; those values stay empty. A missing DSL state is not itself a failure when a WAN state is available. A healthy WAN state does not override a reported DSL failure, or the reverse.

The firmware-update query is refreshed at most once a day. An update warning does not trigger installation.

Troubleshooting

For connection failures, check the monitoring agent, network access, TR-064 access, port/TLS and credentials, then repeat the network device's connection test.
