Veeam Backup Agent
Use the Veeam Backup Agent check to monitor the result, age, and license state of Veeam Agent for Windows backups on an endpoint.
The Veeam Backup Agent check monitors Veeam Agent for Windows on an endpoint — the per-machine backup agent, as opposed to a central Veeam Backup & Replication server. It reads the agent's backup results from the Windows event log and reports each backup job's outcome and age, plus the license state. The check runs on Windows only, every 60 minutes on the octoja agent; the interval is not user-configurable.
Which Veeam check for which Veeam product?
octoja provides separate Veeam checks. They read different data sources, so a check assigned to the wrong Veeam product fails permanently even while every job in Veeam is green. For Microsoft 365 backups, use the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 check on the Veeam M365 server.
Leading symptom of a wrong assignment: the check reports failed although all jobs in Veeam are green. Verify which of the two checks is assigned to the device — also when checks are assigned through tags, where an automatic tag can attach the wrong Veeam check to a device. Agent jobs that a Backup & Replication server manages centrally are monitored by the Veeam Backup & Replication check on that server; this check covers standalone installations that write to the local Veeam Agent event log.
Prerequisites
This check runs on the endpoint, so set it up on the machine that runs Veeam Agent.
- You need the Monitoring Check Management permission. Permissions are assigned under Administration → Groups.
- An octoja agent installed on the same Windows endpoint as Veeam Agent for Windows.
- At least one completed Veeam Agent backup within the lookback window.
Steps
- Go to Devices and open the Windows endpoint that runs Veeam Agent.
- Click the Checks tab → Add Check → Veeam Backup Agent.
- Keep Require the agent to be present on so the check flags machines where Veeam Agent is missing, and keep Evaluate license events on to be warned about an expired or grace-period license.
- (Optional) Turn on Show advanced options to set Warning after (hours) and Critical after (hours) for how old the last successful backup may be (defaults 30 and 50 hours), and Event log lookback (days) (default 14).
- Click Add Check.
After the first check interval, the result appears in the device's Checks tab.
Settings
If the Warning threshold is set higher than the Critical threshold, the two values are automatically swapped before evaluation.
Results
The overall result is the worst per-job outcome, raised to at least Warning when a license event is present.
Collected metrics
- Per job: name, last-run time, status (Success, Warning, or Error), age in hours, and the computed severity (OK, Warning, or Critical)
- The age of the most recent successful backup across all jobs
- The license event id and date, when a license event is present
Notes
- The check detects Veeam Agent by its Windows service or its Veeam Agent event log, then reads the job-finished and license events.
- The event-log query has a 60-second timeout. If it runs longer, the check reports Failure instead of a job result.
- It needs no administrator rights and no network access — it reads the local event log only.
Tips
- Turn off Require the agent to be present if you assign the check broadly and only some machines run Veeam Agent — the check then passes on machines without it.
