LAPS Passwords

Verify on Windows devices that LAPS actually rotates the local administrator password and escrows it in Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID.

The LAPS Passwords check verifies on Windows devices (x64, ARM64) that the local administrator password is actually managed and escrowed by LAPS. It detects Windows LAPS and legacy LAPS 1.0 and checks the managed account, the password age, the backup to Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID, and the LAPS event logs for failed cycles. It runs locally through the octoja agent, every 60 minutes by default.

Prerequisites

  • You need the Monitoring Check Management permission.

Steps

  1. Go to Devices and open the device.
  2. Click the Checks tab → Add Check → LAPS Passwords.
  3. Adjust the settings if needed.
  4. Click Add Check.

To roll it out to many devices at once, use a config package.

Settings

FieldTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
Result when LAPS is not configuredSelectNoCriticalCritical, Warning or OK for a device on which no LAPS backup target is set or no LAPS variant is available at all.
Result when legacy LAPS 1.0 is in useSelectNoWarningWarning, Critical or OK when the device still uses legacy LAPS 1.0.
Expected backup targetSelectNoAnyAny, Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID. If the actual backup target differs, the check raises a warning.
Warning age (days)IntegerNo0Warning when the last password change is at least this many days ago. 0 derives the limit from the LAPS policy (rotation interval + 2 days).
Critical age (days)IntegerNo0Critical when the last password change is at least this many days ago. 0 derives the limit from the LAPS policy (rotation interval + 7 days).
Check policy hardeningBooleanNoNoAdditionally warns about weak password complexity or length, rotation intervals over 90 days, disabled post-authentication actions and disabled password encryption in Active Directory.
Event log window (days)IntegerNo45How far back the LAPS and AdmPwd event logs are evaluated. Values are limited to 1–365. Advanced.
Skip directory lookupBooleanNoNoDo not query the computer object in Active Directory. Escrow can then only be proven from the local event log. Advanced.
Query timeout (seconds)IntegerNo120Maximum runtime of the local LAPS query. Values below 30 are raised to 30. Advanced.

Fields marked "Advanced" only appear after you turn on Show advanced options.

  • With 0 for an age, the check uses the rotation interval from the LAPS policy; if none is set, it assumes 30 days. With the defaults, a warning therefore starts at 32 days and critical at 37 days.
  • If the critical age is not above the warning age, the check sets it to the warning age + 1 day.
  • For backup to Active Directory, the check queries the computer object in the directory. If you turn on Skip directory lookup, it can only prove escrow from the local event log; without a matching event, the result stays at a warning.

Results

The check collects every problem it finds. The overall result is the highest severity.

ConditionResult
No LAPS variant available or no backup target setPer Result when LAPS is not configured; no further checks run
Legacy LAPS 1.0 is in usePer Result when legacy LAPS 1.0 is in use
A Windows LAPS policy is active but the legacy LAPS 1.0 extension is still installed, so neither product manages the accountCritical
Backup to Active Directory without a domain join, or to Microsoft Entra ID without an Entra joinCritical
The managed account does not existCritical
The managed account is disabled or not a member of the local Administrators groupWarning
The directory lookup succeeded but no escrow can be proven, or the required Active Directory schema is missingCritical
Escrow could not be verified, for example because the directory lookup was skipped, failed, or the device is not domain-joinedWarning
The password expiration time stored in the directory has passedCritical
Password age reaches the warning or critical ageWarning or Critical
No password change can be determinedCritical
The last LAPS cycle failed (newer than the last successful one), or legacy LAPS reports an error after the last password changeCritical
The event log is unreadable, or there are legacy LAPS conflicts, an incompatible password policy or tamper eventsWarning
A hardening check fires (only with Check policy hardening)Warning
The LAPS query times out or failsFailure
