NetApp ONTAP

Monitor hardware, volumes, aggregates, LUNs and SnapMirror relationships of your NetApp ONTAP systems via SNMP.

The NetApp ONTAP check monitors NetApp ONTAP systems via SNMP: CPU, memory, temperatures, fans and power supplies, nodes, RAID, volumes and aggregates, LUNs, I/O, SnapMirror, NDMP and dump backups. It runs network-based on an octoja agent on Windows, Linux, or macOS (x64 and Arm64) that can reach the NetApp system over the network, every 5 minutes by default.

Prerequisites

  • SNMP must be enabled on the NetApp system, and the executing agent must reach it on the SNMP port.

Steps

  1. Go to Devices and open the device.
  2. Click the Checks tab → Add Check → NetApp ONTAP.
  3. Enter the NetApp system under Host and provide the SNMP credentials.
  4. Click Add Check.

You can also assign the check to a network device; octoja then fills Host with that device's IP address, and the agent set as Monitoring device runs the query.

SnapMirror lag critical (minutes)Number (0 or more)No240SnapMirror lag at which the result becomes critical

The editor lists the thresholds under Alert thresholds. Every threshold applies as soon as the measured value reaches it.

  • If a warning threshold is higher than its critical threshold, the check automatically uses the lower value as the warning and the higher one as critical.
  • If a threshold is outside its allowed range (percentages 0–100, minutes 0 or more), the check reports Error.

Results

The overall result is the worst status across all detected issues.

ConditionStatus
Global ONTAP status is critical or non-recoverableCritical
Over-temperature, failed fans or power supplies (system, node or disk shelf), or failed shelf electronicsCritical
Failed or pre-failed disksCritical
A node reports itself as unhealthyCritical
NVRAM battery fully discharged, not present, at end of life or over-chargedCritical
A plex is offline, a mirror is degraded or failedCritical
A volume or aggregate reports a file system status other than “mounted” (only Warning for “frozen”)Critical
A LUN is offlineCritical
A SnapMirror relationship is broken offCritical
A dump backup failedCritical
CPU, memory, storage, inode or SnapMirror values reach the critical thresholdCritical
Global ONTAP status is “non-critical”, “other” or “unknown”Warning
Disks are reconstructing, a plex or mirror is resyncing, or a mirror reports another unexpected statusWarning
NVRAM battery partially discharged or near end of lifeWarning
SnapMirror relationship uninitialized or quiescedWarning
A dump backup is restartableWarning
Contact problems with a disk shelf, or a disk-shelf temperature warningWarning
Measured values reach the warning thresholdWarning
No issues detectedOK
Host missing, wrong SNMP credentials, system unreachable or returning no dataError
  • SnapMirror lag is evaluated only for relationships in the “snapmirrored” state.
  • For the I/O rates, the check samples twice, about 5 seconds apart.

Collected metrics

  • Model, ONTAP version and global status
  • CPU and memory usage, disk read and write rate
  • Per node: model, health, NVRAM battery, temperature, fans, power supplies and CPU usage
  • Per volume and aggregate: type, status, mirror status, usage and inode usage
  • Per LUN: size, mapping, online state, error counter, IOPS and throughput
  • SnapMirror relationships with status and lag, dump backups, NDMP counters and disk shelves
