MSMQ Queue Length

Get warned when messages back up in the MSMQ queues of a Windows device.

The MSMQ Queue Length check monitors how many messages sit in the Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) queues of a Windows device and alerts when messages back up beyond the thresholds. It reads the Windows performance counter \MSMQ Queue(*)\Messages in Queue on the device you assign it to. The check runs on Windows only (x64 and Arm64), every 5 minutes by default, and measures the message count at execution time.

Prerequisites

  • Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) is installed on the device and provides the MSMQ Queue performance counter.

Steps

  1. Go to Devices and open the device.
  2. Click the Checks tab → Add Check → MSMQ Queue Length.

Settings

FieldTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
Queue filter (optional)TextNo—Pattern that must match the whole queue name, e.g. *orders*. * matches any number of characters, ? exactly one; matching is case-insensitive. Leave empty to monitor all queues
Warning message countIntegerNo500Number of messages in a queue at which a warning is reported
Error message countIntegerNo2000Number of messages in a queue at which a critical result is reported

The pattern must match the full name as the performance counter reports it. Put * before and after the part you are looking for if you only know part of the name.

Results

Each queue is evaluated separately; the overall result is the worst status across all monitored queues.

SituationResult
All queues below Warning message countOK
A queue holds at least Warning message count messagesWarning
A queue holds at least Error message count messagesCritical
No queue found, or none matches the filterWarning
The performance counter cannot be read, for example because MSMQ is not installedWarning
Unexpected error in the checkFailure

Thresholds also trigger on equality. If Warning message count is greater than Error message count, the check swaps the two values before evaluation. Reading the performance counter has a fixed 30-second timeout.

Metrics collected

  • Name of each monitored queue
  • Number of messages per queue
  • Result per queue
